When listening to music, seeing a movie or playing any media which involves sound, for some unknown reason, the volume may change by itself without any warning. Then someone might tell you to turn it down, using a tone like it were your fault. These unpleasant situations can be avoided with Volume Lock. It only requires a few clicks to set rules which will force the volume to a level of your choosing.

The software will work on most Windows operating systems and it can be installed fast. There are no advanced settings to be made or additional tools to install while navigating the setup wizard. It is all a straightforward process. Downloading it will also be fast due to the package's small size (463 Kb).

The main part of the interface features a list of volumes. They are all organized in a tree structure, according to their categories. Setting up a rule can be done by selecting an item and making use of the few options placed on the right side of the window. You can type a volume value (from 1 to 100) in a small dialog box and select one of the five rules from a drop menu. These simple rules will force the volume to be equal to your given value or set it to be lower or higher than it. Finally, clicking the lock icon, found in the same area, will make the rule take effect immediately. You can also do exactly the same thing for balance or you can simply mute the selected volume.

You can either limit the global volume, the one from a certain application or even recording volumes. You only need to find the item you are looking for in the list. For faster use, Volume Lock lets you select and apply a preset which will automatically limit certain volumes. By default you can find presets for games, evening, muting everything and others. Accessing the general settings panel, you will find options for creating your own presets and even for scheduling them.

Pros

Using the software to limit your volume can be done easily with a few clicks. There is no way someone could get lost in this simple software.

Cons

There is no way to manually add third party applications to the program's volumes list. You can have Volume Lock up and running in no time. With its straightforward features, sudden volume spikes can be a thing of the past.
